Who I am
Nice to meet you. I am Jeroen and go by the handle h3artbl33d. I am a Unix system engineer during the day, hacker by night. Dutch nationality, late-30s, addicted to coffee and philosophy. I (deeply) value ethics, human rights and respect. In the modern era, values like privacy and freedom are under constant attack. I am hugely opposed to this and try to help out wherever I can for a more humane world.
What I do
I am a system engineer by trade and by passion. My platform of choice are the BSDs. I have been using OpenBSD for over two decades (and have become quite the fundamentalist - the photograph in the header is the mascotte, tattoo'ed on my arm) and HardenedBSD for about a decade. My mobile platform of choice is GrapheneOS, which I have been using since the Nexus (Pixel predecessor) era.
I am involved, on personal title, in a couple of projects / organizations:
- I am the founder and primary admin of Exquisite.social, Exquisite.tube and Exquisite.pics - which are, respectively: Mastodon, Peertube and Pixelfed. They are federated alternatives for big tech platforms.
- I am one of the founders and persons behind BSD-NL, a semi-regular meetup and tiny conference in the Netherlands for BSD aficionados.
- I am a board member and head of infrastructure with EuroBSDcon.
I consider myself fluent in: Unix, Linux, Ansible, PostgreSQL, PHP, Python, shellscripting, hardening, security defenses and much more. I do consider tech to be tools to archieve goals, rather than the goal itself. I am mostly an autodidact and have a propedeuse in psychology - and a number of IT certificates. Oh and quite the collection of rewards for responsible security disclosures - like the infamous "I hacked the Dutch government and all I got was this lousy t-shirt" shirt.
When I am not actively using a computer, I slack and learn through some of the awesome talks at CCC media, read a book, watch a show (Mr. Robot FTW), meet with friends, spend some time outside or work out. I am in a relationship with my better half and we have a couple of four legged, hairy kids.
This website runs on an OpenBSD VM with the great folks at OpenBSD Amsterdam.
